Film je smešten u 17. vek i pratipuritansku doseljeničku porodicu koja je napustila civilizaciju i zamenila ježivotom u divljinama Nove Engleske. Ubrzo nakon uspostavljanja novog života, porodici iznenada nestaje novorođeni sin, anjihova ćerka je osumnjičena za veštičarenje, te porodica kreće da se urušavapod uticajem nepoznatog zla. Veštica, koja je prvi samostalni film veomatalentovanog reditelja i scenariste, Roberta Egersa, je zastrašujuća čak i prepomena nadprirodnog. Kritika je film ocenila izuzatno visokom ocenama rekavši da film možda jestesuviše spor (u odnosu na današnje horore) i da je prepun dijaloga, ali da sebavi vrlo važnim motivima koji film rangiraju na vrlo visoko mesto i čine gaizuzetnim.
